Asphalt calculator
How the calculation works
- Area: we add up every shape you enter and subtract the ones marked as cut-outs.
- Volume: area × compacted thickness gives the net volume of finished pavement. Loose mix is thicker before it is rolled, so enter the thickness after compaction.
- Weight: volume × the compacted density of the mix (the default listed under «Default values and sources», or your supplier's mix density if you enter it), converted to short tons.
- Waste margin: added on top for edges, hand work and the first load. Set it to 0 % if your supplier already works from net tonnage.
- Truckloads: optional. Total weight divided by your truck's capacity, rounded up, because you cannot order part of a trip.
Worked example
A 50 × 12 ft driveway paved 2 in thick (compacted), with no waste margin added.
- Area
- 66.7 sq yd
- Volume
- 3.70 cu yd
- Asphalt to order
- 7.25 tons
Default values and sources
| Value | Default | Type | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density of compacted hot mix asphalt | 145 lb/cu ft (published range 144–160 lb/cu ft) | Typical published value | Pennsylvania Asphalt Pavement AssociationR.J. Valente |
| Compaction and waste margin | 10 % | Our default (editable) | — |
Limitations
- Thickness is compacted thickness. Loose (uncompacted) depth is greater.
- Default density is a typical planning value for hot mix asphalt; your supplier's mix design governs. 145 lb/ft³ is at the low end of the usual range, so real tonnage may be higher.
Results are estimates for planning and ordering, not professional, engineering or legal advice. Confirm quantities, sizes and local building requirements with your supplier or contractor before you buy or build.
