Gravel calculator
How the calculation works
- Area: we add up every shape you enter and subtract the ones marked as cut-outs.
- Volume: area × depth gives the net volume. We then add the margin you choose for compaction and waste.
- Weight: volume × density. Pick the material (crushed stone or crusher run with fines) or enter your supplier's density, because density depends on the stone, its size and moisture.
- Bags and truckloads: optional. Bags use the bag volume you enter; truckloads use your truck's capacity. Both round up, because you cannot order part of a bag or a trip.
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft patio base, 3 in deep, crushed stone, with the default 10 % margin for compaction and waste.
- Area
- 200.0 sq ft
- Gravel to order
- 2.04 cu yd
- Weight to order
- 2.85 tons
Default values and sources
| Value | Default | Type | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density of crushed stone / gravel (1/4"–2", loose) | 1.4 tons/cu yd (published range 1.4–1.7 tons/cu yd) | Typical published value | Billdr PROInch Calculator |
| Density of crusher run / road base | 1.5 tons/cu yd | Typical published value | Select Sand & GravelJ1S Contracting |
| Compaction and waste margin | 10 % | Our default (editable) | — |
Limitations
- Density varies with stone type, size and moisture: ask your supplier for theirs. The defaults are typical planning values, not standards; crusher run (with fines) has its own, approximate default.
- Short tons (2,000 lb) in the US edition; metric tonnes in metric editions.
Results are estimates for planning and ordering, not professional, engineering or legal advice. Confirm quantities, sizes and local building requirements with your supplier or contractor before you buy or build.
