Cubic yard calculator
How the calculation works
- Area: we add up every shape you enter and subtract the ones marked as cut-outs.
- Volume: area × depth gives the net volume. We then add the margin you choose.
- Bags: optional. Volume divided by the volume of one bag, rounded up, because you cannot buy part of a bag.
Worked example
A 10 × 10 ft space filled 6 in deep, with no extra margin.
- Area
- 100.0 sq ft
- Volume
- 1.85 cu yd

Limitations
- The result is the volume of the space you describe. It does not know the material, so it does not convert to weight, bags or truckloads: use the gravel, concrete or mulch calculators for that.
- Compaction, settling and spillage change how much you need to order. Add a margin if your supplier recommends one.
Results are estimates for planning and ordering, not professional, engineering or legal advice. Confirm quantities, sizes and local building requirements with your supplier or contractor before you buy or build.
